H I S T O R Y His history is as hazy as the smoke that trails from his lips; a fog of nicotine and forgotten memories which linger around and within him.
Obscurity is his middle name, and to endow Matt with such a quality would not be a mistake; there's just more to him then just his disjointed past and tinted goggles.
What happened to him before he arrived to Wammy's remains a broken memory, the orphanage he was placed in especially constructed for a bunch of genius, albeit neurotically queer kids, all of which were striving for one position and one position only. The position of L - the greatest detective the world has ever come to know. Surprisingly, although he didn't look it, Matt did not lack a brain, and rank-wise was third in the long line of successors to L.
Although he had a chance to take the throne, a kid is still a kid; Matt had better things to do than work himself sick over a bunch of ranks, grades and numbers on paper. Besides, Mello, the boy a rank above him who he'd come to consider somewhat of a companion in this strange place, wanted the title much more than he did. Not to mention the chocolate addicted blond deserved it considering all the effort he put into his work.
Days passed, in and out, time ticking away until the fateful day that Mello, his one comrade in the realm of tests and expectations, suddenly left the orphanage without a word.
It stung.
It hurt.
Matt may have not remembered much from his past before Wammy's, but he remembered what it felt like to be abandoned.
It was an awful feeling. One he'd rather he had forgotten.
But there was no point in dwelling on things much. Mello was gone, L was dead, and life was utterly boring around the house once again. Maybe if he hadn't been so lazy he would've left, followed Mello's trail. But the fact remained that Mello hadn't said goodbye or left anything behind for him. The extent of their companionship had been nothing more than one kid entertaining the other. The lack of any message from Mello simply proved this. And while sure, Matt was kind of bitter he'd lost a playmate he didn't let himself fret over it.
Sooner or later, Matt found himself leaving Wammy's, thrown out into the real world, which, to Matt's displeasure, was just as demanding and boring as the orphanage was. So he took to amusing himself with various video games and trips to arcades. He began to live out the comfortable and responsibility free life of a hermit, holing himself up in a rundown apartment, stealing funds from various bank accounts, leaving the house only for cigarettes and new games to purchase. And of course, amusing himself by sending viruses to various organizations and generally just screwing around, living off takeout and coke.
Yes, Matt was living the life. What more could someone want out of it? Well, maybe it would be nice to have a little bit of excitement, but Matt was content with his lazy lifestyle.
Who knew that soon enough he'd be getting some excitement after all? As for if it's truly the kind of thrill he was looking for…that's yet to be determined. |
P E R S O N A L I T Y Say hello to Matt: gamer, hacker, and all-time apathetic slacker extraordinaire. Matt is, compared to most of the orphans that came out of Wammy's, a rather normal individual. While Mello came out of the place a loose canon, and Near a heartless robot, Matt just ended up a lazy guy with an odd fashion sense and an infatuation with wires and screens. He is rather calm, and can usually hold face when stuck in tricky situations, but when it comes to his obsessions such as his passion for video games and the like, he can turn into quite the geek. Not surprisingly, he is very computer and electronically savvy, being quite the hacker. If the situation allows for him to sway from seriousness, he can be pretty playful and teasing. However, most of the time he's apathetic and seems to care little about others. Along with being in love with electronics he is also addicted to cigarettes and can be spotted smoking one from time to time.
Sure, he can't breathe fire, or summon spirits to fight off foes – that'd be silly. Matt's nothing more than a human. Yet, despite his appearance that might give off the impression he's a delinquent, Matt in fact is highly intelligent. Sure, he sure as hell might not come close to Mello and Near, but he was third in line to be L's successor, so that's got to say something about his mental abilities.
He's also a computer/electronic wiz – hacking, breaching security systems, playing on any sort of game system he can get his hands on – Matt's eyes are usually glued to some sort of backlit screen. One thing is sure, don't underestimate him. Who knows? He might just get a hold of your personal info and use your credit to purchase that sweet new game he saw online.
Although he may seem to not care about much, he is a rather dedicated person when it comes to certain things or individuals. His loyalty is the main reason he gets himself in a pickle, not really being the type to go and search for trouble. In the end, he's just a dedicated dog, ready to lay down his life to save the things he cares for.
It's his lazy, laidback demeanor, predisposition to being loyal, and his infatuation with anything electronic that make this orphan who he truly is.
